Building PV modules in desert areas have lits of advantages such as inexpensive land and low-cost PV module which can benefit high irradiation.
However, transmission of power has its own challenges. As far as I researched, making supergrids and HVDC lines are the best options. My questions are:
1) What are economical solution to transmit power for PV plants in desert?
2) What are the risks?
3) What are the benefits?
DC transport by air lines is very expensive when the distance is less than 500 to 600 KM due to the presence of the conversion stations.
The HVDC is particularly adapted to transport electrical energy by cable. Above a certain distance, about 60 to 80 km for underground links
The second point is that the installation of PV arrays in desert areas also has a disadvantage in terms of panel performance, as the sand grains cover the surface of the panels and require periodic cleaning.

The transmission of large electric power for medium and long distances are already solved. One can use either high voltage AC transmission and or ultrahigh voltage DC transmission UHVDC transmission.
The electronic components of such system are already available with high reliability.
The question is in the side of generation how one would build such high voltage from units of solar modules with relatively low voltage. One uses DC/DC converters and inverters such that one can make full use of the AC transformers in boosting the voltage.
I think such problem may be already solved in the Gigawatt stations installed in China and in USA.

Thanks for your answer. The risks and reliability issues for the panels is not the main questions. The main question is what are the risks in case of Super-grids or UHVDC lines as the transmission method.

I think such projects as Desertec are very required and strategic. However they need intensive cooperation and transparency in dealing with the project as well as fairly distributing its benefits to all partners.
