I think you have to identify the max temp across the 38 grids for each day for the whole 113 years. Based on the max data of each day, you have to estimate mean for all the data (365 days x 113 years). Pl also report the range, SD and SE besides medians for such estimate.

1. What is your threshold value of extreme rainfall amount for a day?

2. A day means 24 hours of period from 0830 hrs of morning of say day 1 to 0830 hrs of morning observations of day 2. This is one day total rainfall rerecorded in which there may be more than one spell of rainfalls . 

3. You can define extreme value depending up on the area and objective of your study.

4. Simple averaging may serve your purpose then you can go for range,S.D.,SE, can also plot probability density function(Software available on site) and some other graphs also.
