Many research positions require you to teach too, so teaching experience can greatly increase your opportunities. Ideally, teaching and grading a whole course, but few PhD students get this opportunity and even a few hours teaching for someone else is better than nothing.

Highly developed skills in using both R and GIS. These will not only serve you well for a potential research/academic career but are also transferable to other professions.

In Engineering/Computer Science developing technical skills as well as engaging with teaching support (delivering tutorials, labs, lectures, grading and curriculum development) and good grounding in theory helps. Since, most PhD studies involve revealing algorithms and not the actual code, it is easy to develop some bad coding practices like 'drivers developing bad habits almost immediately after passing the test' . However, some discipline to maintain professional standards in the skills related to ones field (such as coding) will also go a long way.

I think it highly depends on your career goals. If you want to work in academia, publications, research experience, and teaching experience are really important. But if you want to find a position in industry, industry skills such as data analysis or some other technical skills are really important. It's also important to show you have experience of using such techinical skills.

When you show up for an academic job interview, you carry with you your "bag of tricks." The interviewer will ask "What's in your bag?" In the field of Neuroscience, it would be advantageous to have at least the following in the bag: (1) computer programming skills and experience; (2) you don't need an EE degree, but you should be able to read and understand the instruction manuals of all the equipment you use, so you will know the limitations of your setup and not try to publish measurements having used inappropriate gear; (3) a clear understanding of neural function at the organ, tissue, cellular and molecular levels. In other fields (e.g., environmental health epidemiology), there are other fundamental skills that can be substituted for (1)-(3) above. But the single most important quality that academics look for in a new candidate is what is sometimes referred to as the "fire in the belly," meaning genuine passion for the work. It means that you are an academic because you have no other choice. You are driven by curiosity and you are unable to NOT pursue a problem until you have either found a solution or learn that there is no solution. Good luck.

Its a good question and I think the answer includes two major parts. Firstly, it is important to answer it from the aspect of ones spirit and characteristic. Infinite passion and dedication are two significant factors which brings you the best results such as hardworking, tireless, creativity, and bright ideas. Besides these, the ability to manage the project and good team-work ability and making your special academic and industrial network during your PhD program strongly helps. Secondly, my answer focuses on the technical aspect. It means that you will get higher chance to link to well-known institutes if you improve your linguistic skills, software and simulation skills, fundamental theories and basics of your technical field and be more specific as possible in novel ideas and approaches in your field.

Finally, best leaders and managers in the companies and high rank institutes seek an induvial with a combination of creativity, passion, hard-work, and scientific domination.

Id spend time preparing for the interview process. Many great candidates dont know how to sell themselves. You want to convince people that you'll be a good colleague (friendly, trustworthy, etc.) Beyond the work. Also know what people are working on. It helps make connections with people youll have very little time to get to know.

Also understand gow your research fits the bigger picture and where it can go. Many are skeptical that a fresh Ph.D. actually has developed this skill. Show them that you have creativity to develop this area beyond your work with a dissertation advisor.

Lastly any experience writing grants will be a big advantage.
