--- For all the Cities / Towns along the Rivers in India, the task of establishing the Sewerage Network alongwith Sewage Treatment Plant might not be a feasible option immediately at this point of time. So if all the Waste Outfalls / Drainage Channels leading to the River can be initiated as a points of Bioremediation ( onsite treatment option ), then it may eventually provide the scope for its' reuse or recycle for different meaningful purposes. Finally, as a whole the the pollutants loads to the Rivers might get reduced / minimised.
The way I see it is that the problem this approach is one of time. I mean time for pathogens to die before the water is abstracted and time for natural bioremediation process to reduce the BOD load and allow oxygen replenishment before the next outfall. You would need to construct detention basins through which the full flow of the river could pass. These could be put to productive use but obviously the land has to be available. The longer the detention the better it would be. Obviously it would be theoretically possible to give the same level of treatment as you could get with sewage works if you had enough space but you would be treat the whole river and not just the sewage. What the sewage works is doing is increasing the spatial and temporal efficiency of natural processes. As your target remediation aims yet more stringent eventually it becomes cheaper to use a higher tech approach.
