Non-governmental organisations have been working in different aspects of human development all over the world. They significantly contributed to the development of society. In the context of the development of the tribals what should be their role?
Last Five years I am working in NGO in the sector of rural and tribal development. You can have a look to my profile and paper to get an overview of what NGO can do.
In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 adopted the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which provides the minimal standard for engaging with indigenous peoples. In response, different UN bodies and many specialized agencies (e.g., ADB, FAO, IFAD, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, World Bank, etc.) developed indigenous peoples' policies. To note, many bilateral and multilateral development agencies also have policies for cooperation with civil society organizations including nongovernment organizations, this to strengthen their efforts and increase the effectiveness, quality, and sustainability of their operations. And so, there ought to be many opportunities for NGOs to promote tribal development within the said architecture.
In some cases, NGOs can be spokespersons for a group of people and attempt to influence government policies and programmes on their behalf in order to promote their value softly. Strategy use actually by in many countries. The recent case in Africa that am looking through is Rwanda and South Sudan NGOs.. This may be done through a variety of means ranging from demonstration and pilot projects, representations, participation in public forums, criticisms of other parties base on members composition or financial contributions, etc. This is the way that NGOs can impact Tribal development issues.
Thanks for participating in the discussion and providing the link. It will be useful for my students as well. Last year I had presented a paper in the seminar organised at your institute.
Thank you very much for giving your input on the discussion and focusing on the role of NGOs in doing advocacy for the development of the tribals. I shall be happy if you can share any link on your work/organisation.
Definitely, the NGOs have a very important role to play among the tribals. The government is floating many programmes. But the tribal are not able to take benefot of those programmes. Because either they do not know about the schemes or even if they know they are not able to avail it because of illiteracy and ignorance. The NGOs have to play the role of a bridge between the government programmes and the tribals.
NGOs could never represent truly the tribal group's expectations to decide for their own social development. From all my experience with social development, the altruistic approach have harmed more than helped these groups. When NGOs budgets ends it is a disappointment for the tribal groups used to receive their help. Sustainability is a hard concept to deliver but the only way to enhance their livelihoods.
