In my country, Argentina, heuristic play is a recent pedagogical resource, used in early childhood ( six or five years ago). About child development, there proliferation of research on the contributions of cognitive neuropsychology and an interesting line of work that raises the phenomenon of pathologizing childhood as a result of these developments.

I would imagine that the impact of ipads and similar technology on development is an emerging research area. This could be linked to language learning, or pictorial competence amongst others!

I can see that results coming from neuropsychogy research about visual perception and language development as related to the introduction to reading activities are quite relevant for early childhood education. There are also very interesting issues concerned to children conceptions of what is considered as "unreal" (see contributions of the theory of mind). Best regards, Maria Lucia
For a long time research in early childhood education concentrated primarily on facilitating cognitive abilities, specifically (pre)numerical skills and reading, as well as managing aggression and other forms of antisocial behavior. Lately focus has shifted towards fostering executive functions as a prerequisite for successful skill acquisition and well being, and investigating (and looking for ways to improve) pro-social abilities, such as cooperation, helping and sharing.

You may find the work of Esther Thelen on the dynamic system theory of development a rich, original, and still very timely resource. She did her teaching and research at Indiana U in the US until her untimely death in 2004. see, for example, A Dynamic Systems Approach to the Development of Cognition and Action by Thelen and Smith (MIT Press, 1996).

Implicit relational knowledge as one of the principal developments of the earliest period in life, brought about by the early interactions and the learning process of how things go ob between the infant and his environment. (Karlen Lyons-Ruth, is one predominant researcher in this area)
Procedural knowledge has been another of the research findings.
Together with intersubjectivity, as a complex process and going beyond the cognitive and communicational issues of the term that had been developed first by Philosophers like Jürgen Habermas. It was picked up by the researchers in infant development, primarily by Colwyn Trevarthen in Scotland and enriched during his stay in Boston with Berry Brazelton ( recently speaking at a World Conference in Ediburgh at the age of 107 years).
As in another post here, the executive functions, are as well in this realm.
The dyadic expansion of consciousness, is a hypothesis put forward by Ed Tronick from the Harvard Laboratory in Child Development, which based on previous developments that both Tronick and Trevarthen shared at Boston, as the Mutual Regulation System was proposed as the way infants regulate subjective states.
Well, and I proposed the concept of Initiative as the organization of spontaneity at the psychic level, taking into account the Environmental Response and the negotiating capacity of the dyad as the way towards individual consolidation (see Hoffmann, J. M. et al, Infant Mental Health Journal, 1998 (I & II) pages 1-37).
