Hi Muhammad, I think all will agree that "industrial engineering" is a very wide field. My concise answer would be that we have to facilitate "decision-making under uncertainty". I agree with the previous two answers that technology makes it easier, but having "big data" does not give you a handle on the uncertainty. All the systems around us (transport, health, industry) produce vast amounts of "data", specific "events" happening.

Where I really see opportunities for research in this field is to study, understand and appreciate (quantitatively) what behaviour gave rise to those events. We have a saying "Industrial Engineering is about balancing man, money and machine"... and much of our uncertainty lies in the "man" component. Yet we've conveniently split research into "qualitative" and "quantitative" - but the frontier is to quantify the softer things. That is, studying behaviour, and finding the structure in there.

I agree with J.W. Joubert. It is all about studying behaviour that gave rise to events....
