As you know, R-squared is the proportion of the variance in the dependent variable that is predictable from the independent variable(s) The value you report is very low indeed. Why was this the case? I point to two main reasons. First, the dependent variable has not much to do with the independent variable. Second, the research at hand suffers of problems of intrinsc validity, that is, the dependent variable may be also a funtion of independent varibles whose influence on the dependent varibale you did not control.
Some of your hypotheses might not be supported representing the relationship between independent and dependent variable. This could be the reason for lower r square value.
