In recent years, data science has emerged as a promising interdisciplinary subject, and helped understand and analyze actual phenomena with data in multiple areas. The availability and interpretation of large size data that is a vital tool for many businesses and companies has changed business models, and led to creation of new data-driven businesses.
In agriculture including crop improvement programs, both short and long term experiments are conducted, and big size data is generated. However, deep data mining, meaningful interpretation, deeper extraction of knowledge and learning from data sets are more often missing. Whether application of data science is also vital in agriculture including crop improvement for understanding and analyzing the actual phenomena and extracting deeper knowledge??
In my opinion, data science can definitely be applied to agriculture. Obviously, right now we don't see more such sort of research due to difficulties associated with data collection. However, agriculture in itself is an important topic worth exploring with respect to varied skills for meaningful interpretation of data.
Answering your question, yes, integrating the traditional knowledge of agriculture with modern tools of data science is the need of the hour.
Perhaps because of fewer number of data scientists on RG and lesser interest among crop scientists, I have been waiting feedback to my question since the last 6-7 weeks.
Yes of course... You have explained each component clearly. Big data analytics is the need of the hour to handle the large size of the data on various aspects of the crop. Geographic Information System is one of the important tools to handle such data. Besides one cane integrate the such data in DBMS etc etc......
