Within the Islamic tradition, and particularly Sufi literature, the qualities of the wali (pl. awliya) are well documented. While commonly translated into English as "saint," the term wali is better understood as "friend of God" and their qualities, number, and functions are detailed extensively. The idea of friendship with God refers to the degree of intimacy they have with the Lord. This intimacy and closeness should be understood as an epistemological closeness, for to propose degrees of ontological closeness would violate the central Islamic principle of God's Oneness (tawhid).
Perhaps the best coverage of this material is in Ibn 'Arabi's Futuhat al-Makkiyya, currently being translated by Dr Eric Winkel. A point of distinction between the Islamic and Catholic traditions is that while the wali does not have the same set canonization process, their status as saint occurs while still alive, hence there being a certain number of saints walking the earth at any particular time.
A saint is called a sufi in Punjabi/ Islamic tradition. there are several cults of sufis Qalandria and Naqsh bandiya etc.Im working on a sufi poet Bbulleh shah who is considerd a sufi in Punjab :Pakistan.Im giving you a chunk of my article below:
According to Puri and Shingri 2009, Sufi is that who is pure and the one who goes around in streets wearing a woollen blanket. In Greek mythology the word Sufi is means the one who is enlightened. Some features of the Sufi cult are:
· God exists in all and all exist in God.
· Religion means a way of life; it does not necessarily lead to Nirvana.
· All happenings take place as per the will of God; nothing happens if He does not ordain it.
· The soul is distinct from our physical body and will merge into Divine Reality according to a person's deeds,
· It is the Guru whose grace leads the way and leads to the union with God.
Bulleh Shah was influenced by his contemporaries. Bulleh Shah along with his contemporaries i.e.,Warris Shah possessed the above mentioned qualities as cited above by Ejaz 2011.
