However, I like Michael’s comment, trade-offs can be considered variously. E.g. luxurious human demands are unnecessary: expensive and energy, material wasting appliances, clothes, everyday bathing, throwing away food etc.
Need for discussion on discussion on sustainable development arose because of the trade-offs societies and economies have been experiencing, e.g. high growth rate but large environmental damage. The path of sustainable development is the one that overtime reduces the conflicts and tradeoffs between goals.
It seems that, to a certain point, there might be a trade off. In the next source: Moran, D. D., Wackernagel, M., Kitzes, J. A., Goldfinger, S. H., y Boutaud, A. (2008). Measuring sustainable development - Nation by nation. Ecological Economics , 470-474.
They show that there is a trade off between the Human Development Index and the Ecological Footprint. However, you can find countries that accomplish with both indexes. You can also find a more updated work here --> http://www.footprintnetwork.org/2015/09/23/eight-countries-meet-two-key-conditions-sustainable-development-united-nations-adopts-sustainable-development-goals/
I feel that there are plenty trade-offs in the sense that different stakeholders who are involved see different policies that serve their interests best. I think that it is very dangerous to assume that everybody right away would agree with sustainable development as a goal. Many companies would find arguments why to pay their workers very little, or companies would find arguments, why they cannot afford the filters to clean the air, or to treat liquid wastes. To make the world more sustainable includes to put oneself int he shoes of those stakeholders who benefit from non-sustainable production. One also need to understand that those who introduce sustainable practices suffer when competitors don't do the same. 'A good deed rarely remains unpunished'. Keeping all this in mind then it might be justified to talk of trade-offs of sustainable practices, although I hope that such practices find more and more distribution.
