We are running some TLC plates to separate lipid components and are utilizing a primuline solutions to stain the plates at the end so the lipids light up under UV. A question was brought up about what is happening between the primuline solution and the lipids to make them light up under UV. I can only find a general noncovalent interactions are involved between the two molecules. What type of noncovalent interactions are at play between these two molecules? Also, what part of the primuline molecules is causing it to light up under UV?
