You may be interested in a technology called airwarve oscillometry. The technique is fairly simple and does not require as much patient compliance as spirometry.
During oscillometry measurements, the patient breathes normally through a device which sends small air pulses down its lungs. The system analyzes the relationship between flow and pressure to measure the resistive properties of the respiratory system (i.e. flow limitations) as well as the compliance (i.e. distensibility) of the lungs.
The ERS has also published formal guidelines for this technique, which is also called "forced oscillation technique".
