I guess this is a big question which needs urgent publications ,at least in spots of the world devastated by war ,like my country Iraq!
Well , it is the qualifications which comes in the first place. Once an X has the ABCs qualities to be chosen by committees of experts at universities , or academic institutions whatsoever , s/he is to be a successful university professor.These qualifications could be at personal level added to academic qualifications .

Guidance and mentorship, being a good listener for kicking around ideas, and good suggestions.
Often, my ideas are too broad for an assignment, and I need feedback to rein it in to a manageable and doable goal. Sometimes, I just need a straight 'NO' and being told the question is too broad and general.
Those with the capacity to identify your strengths and push you beyond your 'conceived' limits and work around your deficiencies in an encouraging manner.
The qualities I value are creativity to teach and influence his/her students, compassion to understanding students and passion in both teaching and researching.
Ability to encourage younger generation to grow independently.

Being approachable and supportive. People who are 'too busy'..... are typically unhelpful and use that as an excuse.
