Roberto's link to the EPA document was closer to the mark in that it does address (briefly, but without citations) ecotoxicity through a paragraph on the (low) aquatic toxicity of sorbitan esters. The Japanese Food Safety Commission report deals with food safety of Polysorbates (mammalian toxicity), and is not what I am concerned about.
The EPA inert reassessment was also not quite what I was after... I guess the first step is identifying the metabolites... Not being a chemist - I'm assuming oleic acid and, less likely oxalic acid?
I am interested in identifying all the likely metabolites.... and working on the bacterial/fungal eco-toxicty from there... i.e. if a particular metabolite could have adverse impacts on a particular psychrophylic taxa (for example), then that would be an interesting finding, and perhaps warrant caution in the use of Polysorbate as a cold-region bioremediation agent.
