As Chair of the IUCN/SSC Wild Pig Specialist Group I am interested in how population recovery and growth of wild boars occurred in Europe, and why populations are now expanding. Presumably a reduction in hunting has decreased mortality rates, but this would then also lead to more agricultural conflicts. Have governments taken compensatory measures so that agricultural conflicts are more acceptable? Have urban and/or rural people become more tolerant to wildlife and wildlife impacts? Is there more food for pigs now? Have people gone off wild boar meat? An understanding of processes that facilitated population growth may help us to better address the extremely critical conditions of some Asian pig species, such as Visayan Warty Pigs, Javan Warty Pig, and Bawean Pig (see here for more https://sites.google.com/site/wildpigspecialistgroup/home). Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
