I am studying animation and I have an interest in books, authors and texts on the relationship between the media (in general or specifically the animation) and society. I need indications about the media works, and the relations of domination and resistance, the power relations between other question. JB Thompson and Douglas Kellner are authors I already have contact. I need indications of more alternative authors on the subject. I would also indications of authors talking about animation (cartoons) and its relations both on the technical and language as questions social and cultural.
In current era, internet has the best and the worst impact. for the cartoon perposes, the age of viewer, nostalgia of individuals from their own culture would be the stronger motivation for atracting their interests. Of course, for the groups that are far from Western media, cartoons souds the realities (cinderella is a ducumentory event, not a human dream) to other cultures , but for modern or educated one over here in West, media is one more instrument for cultural- enflence globally, toward money and power.
Based on theorists that i know about the relationship between media and culture, i would suggest you search books or articles of Manuel Castells, Jesus Martín-Barbero, or Alejandro Piscitelli. They propose differents ideas about influences of media in the culture. Particularly, Castells sets three types of identities: legitimizing identity, project identity, and resistance identity.
I think the academic contributions by Nelly Richard ( from Chile), Beatriz Sarlo ( Argentina) and Germás Rey ( Colombia) are quite appropiated to display this question in Latin America.
