Rolando, I think one of the most important of advantage of using PPT is related to focus of attention by students in classes, after that it is a kind of relationship between subject and students that teacher can be create. Also, by using PPT teacher can discuss about the main topics in the limit time.
I think using PPT has so many other advantages that nowadays extremely teachers or lectures used this.

I believe in Using different senses: Auditive, Visual, Feeling, Moving/acting.

So that teacher can use the PPT by creating an active class through students. Heitherto, by some ideas and using PPT in classes (i.e., question-base) teacher can enhance some another sense (i.e., auditive) in class.
The biggest downside of powerpoint is the way that it usurps power. This is because people underuse its features. Instead of using it as a visual aid, colleagues use it to show endless bullet point lists. This has created a situation where many colleagues now simply read their powerpoint to their students and the students sit there, bored, and wonder why they bothered to turn up when they could have just accessed the slides online. Try doing a Google search for 'Death by Powerpoint' I guarantee you will get millions of hits! Powerpoint has potential but it needs to be an additional tool - not the prime teaching tool. The prime teaching tool should always be the teacher/lecturer.
Erik, It is easy to blame the teacher or the tool but I wonder whether part of the reason for 'Death by Powerpoint' is because lecturers have little time to think about their teaching and how best to communicate their subject matter. Under pressure of time, bullet point slides make presentation easier. I see this as systemic as organisations push for greater output from fewer staff members.
The other element of this is the number of people placed in positions of having to teach subjects that they have very little knowledge about. In this case, the slides may not be their own. Rather that are using slides that came with the textbook or were passed on from the previous lecturer. With limited knowledge of the subject, they read the slides to the class as that is safer than straying into subject matter that they don't have the knowledge to defend. This has happened to me where I had a course / module dropped on me two weeks before teaching started but had limited knowledge of the content. Although I have a reasonably broad background in my subject area, I lacked sufficient depth to be able to modify the materials quickly. Result was working from someone else's slides without really knowing why they had put some of the material on the slides.
This discussion is closely related to what we have described as fundamental patterns for lecture design (especially SUITABLE DELIVERY FORM SELECTION and REGULAR ATTENTION RECUPERATION). Power point is a tool and should be used as such as others have said. For me it helps to organize my presentation in a proper sequence so that I will not forget any points that I should give the student in proper sequence. In my area of specialization requires a lot of complex illustrations and diagrams that are often so complex that it is impossible to draw them properly on the board. SO it helps to present the material clearly, coherently and in logical sequence. I spend a lot of time planning and going through my slides a number of times to make sure that it is correct. If you cannot spend that kind of time during the preparation of power point slides, then you are literally reading from the textbook (albeit slides) which is bad. Also I make these slides available to the students through our LMS so that they can make any necessary notes beyond what is presented in the slides. Also slides do not contain a lot of information that I will be adding to that. That way power point is a great help if it is properly utilized.

I agree with other answers in that PowerPoint appropriately used can be a powerful tool to enhance learning. I also find that a PowerPoint presentation helps keep me on track and ensures I cover all key points in a logical and coherent way. However, to enhance learning the presentation needs to include visual representations/video links/ graphics etc which are often emotive and serve to clarify points, encourage student engagement and enhance students' memories of the key points.
A definite down side is that time strapped lecturers often rely on PowerPoint presentations to serve as lecture notes - hence the need for information overload on each slide and Death by PowerPoint.
For PowerPoint presentations to effectively enhance students' learning experiences during lectures, thought should be given to developing a different set of lecture notes. It is my belief that an engaging and visually stimulating PowerPoint presentation will not necessarily serve as an effective set of notes for student exam preparation.

PPT is a tool; a tool that can effective for both faculty and students, but should be used selectively and appropriately.
The benefits for faculty are it keeps you on task and helps you focus on your key points so you meet your established objectives and so not become the wandering lecturer! Truthfully, it is safer for a new faculty member to follow your slides than to stray from your slides and open the dialogue to a potentially challenging classroom discussion. For faculty, I think this is a developmental process.
If used properly, the benefits to students are they can identify the key points of your presentation and help organize their thinking process. Using a sequential approach can facilitate the development of the student’s thought process.
The downside for students is they think they can gather the key points without being present; however, if they only look for the key points without the elaboration that went along with the presentation could limit their understanding and ability to apply those key points. In addition, the instructor’s key points are not the ONLY points in class. Peers (other students in class) provide tremendous input to the topic at hand, and in fact, may modify the key points the instructor intended to present.
The downside for faculty is the predesigned PowerPoint (PPT) can constrain the discussion. While the PowerPoint provides a structure and direction, it can limit flexibility. At times it can constrain the conversation in the classroom….”hold that thought, we will get to that later (in the PowerPoint)”.
The other challenge with PPTs is that if you do include all the information it becomes like a bulleted list to memorize without really understanding or applying the concepts at a higher level. It gives students a false sense of security that they can simply memorize the slides rather than apply (in class) what is described on the slides.
Of course there is the technique of using PPTs effectively … Are you reading your PPTs (not so effective!); are you moving through your PPTs without ever pausing for students to process information by interspersing active learning strategies (e.g., questions, think-pair-share, cases, videos) throughout (not so effective!); are you adding pictures and animations that detract from your message (not so effective!). Creating PPTs needs to be a thoughtful process. Creating effective PPT presentations that consider active learning strategies takes time and effort, but I believe the time and effort are well worth the outcomes.
Finally, there is delivery! Never read your PPT, that is what creates “Death by PowerPoint!” Create PPTs that use pictures to reinforce content. Create PPTs that pause periodically to engage learners in active learning strategies that enable students to apply the information presented. Create PPTs that encourage students to critically think about the content presented.
Fantastic if it's used as a facilitation tool - lots of pictures and few words - to guide discussion, spark ideas, generated bate and transmit enthusiasm.
The worst use is when slides are packed with words / data and where the presenter reads their slides. Unforgivable!
I think power point is more effective when dealing with smaller classes. If power point isnt going to add something new , it is better not to use it. What i like about power point is the chance it gives to build self esteem .
In EFL classes powerpoint can help to present some concepts that can be clarified more through pictures , audios and videos but be careful to use less words and make it short and brief .
some very interesting responses - I think the key that is being identified is that ppt is a tool not an endpoint, that it can be an effective, interactive and motivating adjunct to your teaching or it can be used as an excuse for more thorough preparation and commitment to connecting with a class. It seems that it is the teacher / presenter behind the tool that is the deciding factor in how good a presentation is, not the mode of its production.
It differs from one science to another, I agree that power point is not the main tool for teaching but teacher is the source of education and information for students (based on interaction between teach and student). Power point could be just a secondary tool to help teachers for illustration of figures that needed to be shown for students to save time in lecturing. Using power point to help in teachers and students is the primary reason and not just to read the slides.

The main strategy in my use of powerpoint slides ( to our class's advantage of course ) has been to vary purpose and content sequence of slides according to the key objecitves of the lecture/discussion; some slides carry bulleted texts and others images, cartoons, graphs, tables and so forth. I do avoid using transitions unnecessarily as well as those mainly fanciful slide designs.( leavefanciful designsto corporate presenters who want to impress).
The time spent preparing an effective multirep and multimedia presentation on ppt is well worth it. Thankfully too there are many useful hints and guidelines you can find online, The most important tip has to be that it is the pedagogy ( the objectives) of your lesson - not the expediency of the technology.that must dictate the way you powerpoint.
For power point lecture presentation: It is a very good approach for presenting the lectures for students. The objective will reach to the student in an interactive way. The Lecturer will concentrate on the main objective of the topic in slides and photos with necessary illustrations.
Other researchers have proposed excellent responses here. To add an additional component, I would mention aspects to consider when using PowerPoint within an inclusive classroom. If for instance, there is a student who has a visual impairment, then relying on powerpoint either as the instructor or presentations by students means that additional effort will need to be made to explain any imagery that is shown on the screen. While this may seem obvious, from my experience it is an extra effort that needs to be instilled as a pedagogical practice. Ultimately it is a useful component to include in any PowerPoint, making the details on the page accessible for all. And as long as PowerPoint is included judiciously, it can be a useful tool to allow students to see information and access before/after class.

Advantages: widely used, plenty of functions, fancy presentation possibility to link to other means and sites (videos etc).
Disadvantages: maybe some applications which can make the presentation more interractive could be useful. This can be overcome by linking slides to sites though.

The question is related to using ppt in the class room. Who knows more about the topic and they can make short PPT slide and they can deliver easily. But in the sake of students view all the students are not able to follow the slides. Most of the contents of the topic we are delivered by explaining a short note of the title or line. If the students not follow our brief explanation then that will bursnden for students. Final outcome the speaker can easily delivered his lecture by making a short PPT but my opinion students may not follow.

The main advantage of PPT presentation in class is better time management during lecture presentation,
and flexibility in stressing on more important points to be delivered at expense of brushing over lesser important ones, however, a major drawback is that it can sometimes lead to passivation and lack of
actual involvement of the audience , who may take up more of a viewers role, in my opinion, blackboard based teaching and ppt format should be used in conjunction for more effective presentation of the lecture material to the audience.
We should re-look at how ppt are being used for presentation at current time among students. It is a good tool, but , it inhibits the development of cognitive ability.... lots of cut and paste used for presentation...
