Bio diesel can not be used without blend.

To start, you have the problem of the raw-material: it doesn't make sense on a global scale to use farming land to produce biofuels and the infrastructure to collect waste cooking oils is poorly implemented and developed. Also, the amount waste triglycerides and fatty acids is not that big (on an industrial scale).

Finally, personal opinion, in very few years the combustion engine is dead. Batteries and fuel cells will take over.

Biodiesel is an alternative subtitute to fossil diesel diesel, however the cost of production and availabilty of raw material for large scale production remain an issue.

Increase in NOx. Cost and environmental issues depending upon feedstock source. Less density, so an increase in fuel consumption. Older engines likely to have problems with seals. Manufacturers limitations on the amount of bio-diesel in the mix.

Thanks to all of you for your valuable answers. It is true that biodiesel (rape seed oil, palm oil, jatropha oil etc.) can be used with blend up to 20% or 25% along with diesel. Preparation and production is costlier and can be used as only the alternate fuel. NOx emissons are higher. Apart from this can we have any other limitations?

But I have to add that the smell from the bus traffic in Stockholm is today much better since the bus and taxi companies are running the motors with gas obtained from the big sewage plant located at Henriksdal (located just outside centre of Stockholm). If you stand at the bus stop outside the buses you really can feel the improvement of the air.

one of the major problem with using biodiesel is their density, which is much higher and hence cannot be used without blending with diesel.

though transesterification is used to reduce the density, it also increases the cost of production of the fuel.

biodiesel helps in reducing emissions but NOx is increased, reducing NOx is another major concern.

storage of the blends for a long term also have effects on its usage.

above all directly implementing biodiesel usage in an existing engines which are having very precise control and fuel metering systems (unlike the test engines used for research process) again have impacts on its usage.

storage and distribution have not been setup largely in countries like India.

overcoming all these factors are much needed to use them in a wide range.

I recall the major truck manufacturers stating that as the amount of bio-diesel in the fuel mix increases the frequency of maintenance (especially engine oil changes) would have to increase.

Look for NOx and you find an interesting graph showing that mixing diesel and biogas gives high NOx emissions. Pure biogas looks OK.

Biodiesel as it is cannot be used in engines. It should be blended with diesel. The cost of preparation is some what high and storage suffers difficulties. This could be used as an alternative fuel. This is one of the limitation.

The main limitation is the availability of the fuel. The rest - ensuring adequate quality of fuel, choosing the appropriate engine and operating conditions, ensuring material compatibility, ensuring reasonably low exhaust emissions, etc. - are, relatively speaking, simple engineering problems.

Biodiesel is prepared by transterification process and bio fuel like lemon peel oil, rape seed oil etc. be got by plantation of trees in a larger area. Moreover, this should be blended with biodiesel to use as a fuel.

To use biodiesel in the current environment has so many setbacks in the sense that it is to blended with pure Diesel, needs huge land for plantation to get oil and preparation of the same involves cost.

Biodiesel can be used blended with Diesel. Diesel engine need not be modified. Preparation takes a process and is got from vegetable oils or animal fats. Hence this require large area of land for plantation. This suffers from higher NOx emissons and can be rectified by exhaust gas recirculation.

There is a use of biodiesel and this is used as an alternative fuel. The limitations could be firstly, Diesel was now used as a primary fuel and available, secondly, in order to prepare a significant amount of biodiesel, huge plantation is necessary and thirdly even though biodiesel is prepared, this should be blended with Diesel.

Biodiesel has a limitation as this should be blended with Diesel, suffers from higher Nox emissions. This Nox emissions are reduced by having additional exhaust gas recirculation circuit.

I have worked on biodiesel and I have performed engine testing for the same as a blend with regular diesel fuel. The emissions are an issue, but the viscosity is a tad higher for Biodiesel. Fuel properties are almost close to diesel fuel. These are my observations.
