Drawback

The catalytic processes commonly used for the production of biodiesel fuel present a series of limitations and drawbacks, among them the high energy consumption required for complex purification operations and undesirable side reactions. Supercritical fluid (SCF) technologies offer an interesting alternative to conventional processes for preparing biodiesel. This review highlights the advances, advantages, drawbacks and new tendencies involved in the use of supercritical fluids (SCFs) for biodiesel synthesis. the most important drawback to apply biocatalysts in biodiesel synthetic processes is the high cost of enzymes, making necessary to develop stable and reusable bio catalytic systems for extended operation times SFCs have shown to be suitable systems to overcome these drawbacks following the appropriate design of both reactor and reaction conditions.

In this system, approximately 80 percent of the alcohol and catalyst are added to the oil in a first-stage CSTR.However, free and total glycerol was excessively high. It was found that the centrifuge size limited flow rates and that the retention reactor was too short. The alcohol fumes were very irritating to those working in the area and potentially hazardous. To eliminate the fumes, the experiment was moved to a well–ventilated area. Future testing with the system will require an alcohol vapor capture system.. costs of the centrifuge and metering pumps is high.

An Ultrasonic Bio diesel Reactor

An ultrasonic biodiesel reactor greatly reduces the reaction time of the ingredients. It does this by agitating the ingredients. When the ingredients are agitated, methanol is decreased. This causes the ingredients to stick to each other and become properly mixed. Usually, one hour is needed to thoroughly mix the ingredients. With the help of ultrasonic waves, the needed time is reduced to less than one minute. Once proper mixing is done, reaction happens. Agitation due to ultrasonic waves also increases the quality and amount of produced biodiesel.
