i will do my research which is testing neuroprotection of drug onglobal cereberal ischemia reperfusion model in wistar rat but i want to know the factor should i considered when i choose age and weight of the rat
Few things to consider: Aged rats ( 2 yrs old at the higher end) may be good; but they will be very expensive; since you are trying to study neuroprotection; keep in mind drug metabolism between rats and humans is quite different.
Spontaneously hypertensive rats (one of the morbidity factors) develop hypertension at at the age of 6 wks and derived from wistar kyota rats
Mongolian gerbils (80-100 g) may be another alternative; although many may NOT prefer; the good thing is these gerbils lack circle of Willis and lack collateral blood flow; you can occlude bilateral carotid arteries and good fit for global cerebral ischemia; but this model has its own limitations. Be aware.

" The overall findings indicate that rats grow rapidly during their childhood and become sexually mature at about the sixth week, but attain social maturity 5-6 months later. In adulthood, every day of the animal is approximately equivalent to 34.8 human days (i.e., one rat month is comparable to three human years). "
