Water pollution has so many adverse effects on humankind and the environment including but not limited to waterborne diseases, accumulation of toxic elements in aquatic organisms, etc. In general, exposure to high levels of polluted water can lead to death.

Ecosystems have a great capacity of auto-purification in case of accidental pollution. But if the contamination is continuous or if the concentration of the polluant is high, repercussions could be dangerous on biodiversity by killing sensitive organisms, and then causing imbalance in all the ecosystem.

In order to thrive, healthy ecosystems rely on a complex web of animals, plants, bacteria, and fungi-all of which interact, directly or indirectly, with each other. Harm to any of these organisms can create a chain effect, imperiling entire aquatic environments. When water pollution causes an algal bloom in a lake or marine environment, the proliferation of newly introduced nutrients stimulates plant and algae growth, which in turn reduces oxygen levels in the water. This dearth of oxygen, known as eutrophication, suffocates plants and animals and can create “dead zones,” where waters are essentially devoid of life. In certain cases, these harmful algal blooms can also produce neurotoxins that affect wildlife, from whales to sea turtles.
Chemicals and heavy metals from industrial and municipal wastewater contaminate waterways as well. These contaminants are toxic to aquatic life—most often reducing an organism’s life span and ability to reproduce—and make their way up the food chain as predator eats prey. That’s how tuna and other big fish accumulate high quantities of toxins, such as mercury.
Marine ecosystems are also threatened by marine debris, which can strangle, suffocate, and starve animals. Much of this solid debris, such as plastic bags and soda cans, get swept into sewers and storm drains and eventually out to sea, turning our oceans into trash soup and sometimes consolidating to form floating garbage patches. Discarded fishing gear and other types of debris are responsible for harming more than 200 different species of marine life.

Discharge of chemical substances in aquatic ecosystems (rivers, lakes, oceans) may cause changes in biotic community structure and function; otherwise know as biotic integrity. Among the main effects of pollutants on aquatic organisms, the literature reports severe pathologies, behavioural problems, and species migration and disappearance. These effects not only alter the functioning of communities and ecosystems, but also mean the loss of irreplaceable heritage potentially useful to health and sustainable development. The conservation of biological diversity essentially demands the conservation in situ of natural ecosystems and habitats. The aim of this work was to carry out a synthesis of the literature on urban liquid effluents in view to highlighting their potential impact on aquatic ecosystems, and thus obtain better understanding of their consequences on the quantitative and qualitative degradation of water resources, especially regarding the loss of biodiversity. This work reported in this chapter has four main sections. In the first section is presented a physicochemical characterisation of urban waters. The second section describes the different mechanisms implemented in the treatment of urban waters. The third section presents the regulatory aspects intrinsically related to urban effluents. The fourth section is devoted to studying the impact of urban effluents on aquatic biodiversity. The “complete ecotoxicological approach” is used to present the acute and chronic effects of certain pollutants present in urban waters on aquatic organisms and food chains.

This study reports the results of an analysis performed on a 40.5 km stretch of River Tungabhadra. The results show that there was a significant increase in all the physical and chemical variables of the river downstream of Harihara town, particularly in the pre-monsoon season. However, all the variables remain within the standards recommended for drinking water. Based on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines, the classification of water at various segments of the research focal area is as follows: the 12.08 km stretch from the upstream boundary (Ingalagondi) is designated as class C, based on the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). However, from 12.08 km to 40.5 km on the stretch of downstream Harihara is designated as Class D, based on the BOD. However, in terms of dissolved oxygen (DO), the river satisfies the requirements for Class C (> 4 mg/L) at all of the locations sampled across all periods.

The environment of agriculture (whether terrestrial or aquatic) is in a very serious threat. Polluted water contains different toxic substances that could either destroy or retard the growth of crops and causes potential threat to the survival of animals that utilize the water most especially man and aquatic species. This may also imply shortage of sea foods supply to humans. Man is one of the main recipients of the reciprocal effects of all of these. Man suffers a huge loss of essential food requirements for his normal growth and development, reduction in population growth, economic loss, among others.
