Drug pumps seem an interesting option for managing chronic pain. I have seen similar devices used for insulin delivery. I wanted to know what are the disadvantages, complications, and limitations of this technology. I also wonder whether such devices could be broadly applied to deliver any medication or there are any fundamental restrictions.

infection and thrombosis are the most frequent complication of this technology. Also the pump implantation requires a small surgery with all consequensis.

I have seen few usability issues with infusion pumps here:
1. Cumbersome data entry process
2. Visibility of data screen / UI &
3. Interconnectivity or interoperability with others pumps, devices as well as EMRs.

Thank you very much for your replies. As far as I know, insulin pumps work with a small canula that is inserted by the patient in adipic tissue in the abdomen. I was suprised by the high rates of infection associated to the use of these devices (Article Insulin Infusion Set: The Achilles Heel of Continuous Subcut...
). I also heard of patients complaining about recurrent skin irritation with these devices. Do you believe infection rates will be as high for intrathecal pain pump users?- Badges
