What are the specific laboratory test for identification of C&DW as Hazardous. Corrosivity, Reactivity, Toxicity and Ignitability are some parameters for selection of hazardous material but what are the specific laboratory test for C&DW?
C&D waste are inert and allowed for storage only if sorted (if they do not contain plastics, chemicals, asbestos, even metals). Otherwise they might contain heavy metals, toxic plastics, resins, PCBs etc. and must be analyzed to comply strict norms. The main lab tests include: Leaching behaviour test. Up-flow percolation (norm EN 14405:2017); Leaching behaviour test. Influence of pH on leaching with initial acid/base addition - (EN 14429:2013); Determination of total organic carbon TOC (EN 13137:2001); Analysis of eluates. Determination of pH, As, Cd, Cr VI, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cl-, NO2-, SO42- (ENV 12506:2000); Determination of Ammonium-N, AOX, conductivity, Hg, phenol index, TOC, CN- easily liberatable, F- (ENV 13370:2001); Determination of hydrocarbon content in the range of C10 to C40 by gas chromatography (EN 14039:2004). If the results show that the values do not exceed limit values, the C&DW may be stored as inert waste. Otherwise, they are considered hazardous waste and must be properly managed.
