I want to estimate the somatic cell count from Mastitic milk in caprine and bovines. For this I want to know the procedure, different methods and interpretation of SCC. If any researcher have anything please share with me your valuable information.
Different methods for detection of mastitis (somatic cells in milk) are:
1. California Mastitis Test (CMT; a cow-side test);
2. Wisconsin Mastitis Test (WMT; on-farm test),
3. Direct Microscopic Count (DMC) using the pyronin Y methyl green stain.
4. Electronic Somatic Cell Counting equipment: Fossomatic cell count (FSCC), deLaval cell counter (DCC), Combifoss etc., and by
5. Electrical conductivity of milk, it increases during mastitis due to increases in Na+ and Cl- , Changes in conductivity can be detected by hand-held or in-milkline instrumentation.
I agree with Laxmana very good description of all methods and good documentation. Foss instruments are accurate but very expensive. In a farm scale the CMT test is the best to estimate SCC. In a laboratory scale i recommand Bentley SCC counters. Actually there are portable counters using ready kits and have acceptable accuracy.
