There are different methods to apply coating on to the substrate in a laboratory. Some of them are spray, dip, brush and spin coating; there might be other methods too. How do we make a selection between these many choices ? If my main objective is not to investigate on the application method, but rather something else, which method should I go for ?
I think you need to add some details to your question such as
1. the substrate material, surface character (rough or smooth), flexible, rigid
2. the coating - water or solvent based, viscosity, etc.
I agree with david as the substrate material may vary the adhesion of the coated material. For example in case of paper substrate the surface energy of the paper is high and comparative for poly-amide it is very low if we want to deposit the graphene based ink or other conductive ink. However you can prefer the thermal coating for any kind of substrate and RF sputtering for thin film deposition, spin coating, bar coating,screen printing etc.

My substrate is hot rolled medium carbon steel.The coating material is organic with some nano sized reinforcements.
the compatibility between support and coating material is important too. (polarity, hydrophilic/hydrophobic differences, and so on).
