There is a difference between the mechanical properties of a pure metal and the metal oxide, if both materials were tested in a separate manner. The difference exists because both the pure metal & the oxide metal are two different materials. In contrast, when a metal is covered by its own oxide, a composite. I would in general say that the mechanical properties of the composite would fall between the mechanical properties of the pure metal and the metal oxide.
