As the world is slowly shifting from fossil fuel format to renewable energy format for electrical energy generation, what are the recent trends in technology upgradation for existing coal based thermal power plants?
Fluidized bed combustion, and Gasification is the main trends now in Recent power plant, in which the sulfur and nitrogen gases reduced to become 10% during combustion.
Basu, P. (2006). Combustion and Gasification in Fluidized Beds.
For Existing power plants we will have to increase the efficiency of the plant. Increasing efficiency will reduce consumption of coal and thereby reduces the emissions of carbon dioxide and reducing pollution.Reduction of pollution is also a prospective research area.
Amongst the new technologies for inferior coal fluidized bed coal combustion and gasification, integrated gasification combined cycle etc.
Combustion efficiency can be increased by using oxygen enriched air. Nox can be reduced by staged combustion.
My take is the trend will shift towards carbon capture, storage and utilization technologies (CCSU), Highly Efficient Low Emissions (HELE) coal-fired or IGCC power plants. See the following reference for some details on HELE Coal fired plants https://bit.ly/2v3AMX2.
