By 2030, Asia and the Pacific shall have at least 22 megacities including Tokyo (37.2 million), Delhi (36.0 million), Shanghai (30.7 million), Mumbai (27. 8 million), Beijing (27.7 million), Dhaka (27.4 million), and Karachi (24.8 million). From Mumbai to Shanghai, such cities are deploying "smart" technology—electronic devices connected to other devices or networks—to address the multisectoral challenges faced by massive, interconnected metropolitan centers. A "smart city" is a place where traditional infrastructure, networks, and services are made more efficient through ICT.

Notwithstanding the mobility challenges the phenomenal increase in cars poses, what do smart cities mean for the three billion people who shall be living in slums by 2050? The concept of a smart city can—and must—mean more than the use of ICT for urban transport and lower emissions of greenhouse gases: among others, it implies smarter, upgraded water supply and waste disposal facilities, and more efficient ways of lighting and regenerating urban districts; it also encompasses a more interactive and responsive administration, education, healthcare, safer public spaces, and the needs of growing and ageing populations. Digital financial services systems beckon too.

In short, a smart city is not just a city that leverages ICT in a particular sector but that implements ICT for the benefit of its communities, with their participatory action and engagement, to excel in the areas of economy, environment, living, mobility, people, and government. Definitely, ICT cannot do it alone: but it is an indispensable ally of commercialization, funding, intelligent policies, business-process transformation, and business-model innovation. All the while, smaller settlements of 500,000 inhabitants continue to grow; indeed, many of the fastest growing cities in the world are such settlements.

It is difficult to determine where the future is heading. Smart cities have improved the efficiency of cities, but the problems of cities in the developing world are too big to be solved by smart cities.

IT is used in different ways, it can be used to control others and interfere with their privacy (Big Brother). We hope that cities will use this tool effectively

The real example of a sustainable city is Freiburg in the southwestern part of Germany. The city is known as an environment protecter. Green walking paths, cycling routes, public transport station design, the participation of citizen in Designing buildings, creating spaces for social interactions among people in the environment, living without a car, designing of houses and urban areas were regarding the protection of environment, the use of rainy water and environmental energies is one part of the features of this city.

In fact, in sustainable cities where the benefits of intelligence have been added to them, the solutions to the use of environmental energy is a major step. It is also important to reduce energy consumption along with increased thermal comfort.

I still think that smart contracts via blockchain are going to pivotal to the functioning of a true smart city. Through smart contracts, we'll be able to better handle resource management, purchase and sale of property within the city, etc. These contracts would have to be integrated into a smart internet of things (SIoT) I suppose, such as smart locks, to truly be effective however.

Everything should be smart with smart people who are able to deal with smart things !

What modern, innovative technologies should be used to develop the city of the future according to the smart city concept?

(1) Promoting cycling and walkability.

There is more and more awareness of the need to plan for walkability and cyclability in cities. The spread of cycle hiring facilities such as the schemes in London and Paris, and recognition of the needs of cyclists are important because cycling and walking have numerous benefits in terms of reduced congestion, improved air quality, promoting health and reducing health costs.

(2) Planning for local hubs.

As cities spread we need to think of hubs, and how local services can be provided at these hubs. This reduces the need to commute or travel in the first place. Being able to situate people's homes near to their jobs and the things they need helps to keep it local and reduce congestion and carbon emissions.

(3) Congestion charging.

This helps because it puts a price on diesel and petrol-fuelled personal travel. It actively encourages more sustainable travel modes.

(4) Extensive provision of electric vehicle charging points.

This encourages their uptake, especially if electric scooters and other small vehicles are facilitated for what are, after all, the majority of journeys: short ones. Hire schemes for small electric vehicles, like those schemes mentioned for bikes above, allow people to use one for a journey, and leave it where they are going for someone else to use.

(5) Seamless travel.

Properly joined-up public transport systems allow people easily to hop from bus to Metro/subway to train using the same payment method and without having to wait very long. Being able to take a bike on a train or even the Metro/subway is desirable.

there are many important features, but I think what often should be at top of the list is sustainable transportation: this starts with smart planning to reduce the need to mobility and then to organize mobility in ways that help to reduce resource use, makes mobility convenient and reduces congestion arising form mobility.

Yes, it is necessary to change the development strategy based on intensifying the exploitation of the Earth's resources on the sustainable development strategy. It is necessary to develop new energy technologies based on renewable energy sources to slow down the progressing greenhouse effect of the Earth in order to reduce the risk of dramatic natural cataclysms. It is necessary to develop ecological innovations, while it may not be too late. It is necessary to save the Earth by extinction for future generations.

The 21st century is the last moment to introduce global sustainable development based on the development of renewable energy and ecological innovations. Sustainable development should be analyzed and measured in correlation with the analysis of economic growth and the share of individual sectors in the country's economic development, including the transformation of traditional energy sources into renewable energy, environmental reclamation and recovery of recyclable materials, and ecological innovations.
