The various indices are available in ERDAS Imagine. You can choose any one. In ENVI, you have to give the formula in Bandmath for calculating indices. Software gives the same values but you have to choose index.
I am interested to use "AVHRR GIMMS NDVI3g" because this is available from 1981-2015 as i read from some literature. I have several questions in mind as follows:
1. I dont know from where I will get these data sets?
2. What is the resolutaion of these data sets?
3. Which software I should use?
Expert opinion and guide is required in this regard.
USGS/EROS https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/ is one of the databases to access AVHRR based NDVI from 1981 onwards for the globe https://lta.cr.usgs.gov/noaa_cdr_ndvi . The resolution is 0.05 ° Again in the same database you would find AVHRR Phenology data at 1 km resolution from 1989 onwards https://lta.cr.usgs.gov/avhrr_phen
NASA's Ecocast is another great data source from 1982 onwards with a spatial resolution of 8 km https://ecocast.arc.nasa.gov/data/pub/gimms/3g.v0/
As far as RS/GIS software is concerned, there are both open source as well as commercially available options. It really depends on what you are most comfortable using.
