I have two reactors of autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria and I want to know more about bacteria activities. I don't know what media is better for their cultivation like nutrient broth or agar. blood agar etc.?
There is no universal media either for hetero- or autotrophic bacteria. If you don't give more details about what you want to do, what are those reactors, etc. is nearly impossible to give a suitable answer
Autotrophic bacteria are those which can grow in a media where the essential compound is not given as a suppliment. For example autotrophic media may contain no Organic carbon or organic nitrogen for an autotroph to grow. Depends on your work. As Xabier said, further details are needed. Heterotrophic bacteria need organic content for growth. Many general media like Luria-Bertani or NB are good heterotrophic complex media. Go through the literature for further simplicity..
The best growth of bacteria (all of kinds bacteria) not only influenced by growth media, but also a lot of factors, such as temperature, pH, moisture, salinity, etc. Even we have rich-nutrition media, but the environment does not support bacterial growth, i think the growth can not reach in optimum level.
Using media is depending on bacteria that we want to cultured. We must know our bacterial identity, especially from nutrition becausea bacteria sometimes has different needs of nutrition with another.
For heterotrophic bacteria you may want to use a medium that will give you the total numbers of all heterotrophic bacteria...which are culturable because some may be viable but not culturable. There is one medium I have used before and its called Plate Count Agar
