I'm not sure that I can provide you a response for your answer. It really depends on what you do with this technology.
Simi Motion is a markerless motion capture system. It provides you with quantitative information about movement.
My modest opinion:
Good points: easy to use, markerless, out-of.-lab use
Bad points: lower precision than marker systems, needs an almost perfect alignement with movement.
For me, it would be an option in case you can not use markers dut to your experimental settings, or if you cannot afford any IR system, some data is always better than nothing! but be carefull on the interpretation and use of it!
my school is planning to buy IR system (Vicon or Qualisys) based on my suggestions, and i think to have something easy is good for beginners. your + and - points are helpful.
I have some experience with BTS IR system and they do have a software called BTS Clinic, extremely easy to use for begginers... You should introduce a complete protocol but once you have it done, it can be used for non-experienced biomechanical professionals... Maybe you can have a look on it also... Vicon and Qualysis are both excellent options for biomechanics!
SIMI has uniqueness in as they use no infrared technology but utilizes image based techniques. SIMI use high quality video recordings with high frame rates and high resolutions can captured and saved using synchronized industrial cameras. Using the latest algorithms of image processing, Simi Motion can capture motion in detail and calculate 2D/3D data. With SIMI software best data quality can be received with available operation speeds. Image based technology is the future of movement analysis and Simi is the one of the market leader in this area.
Benefits of purchasing SIMI
With SIMI, a range of configurations are possible to suit customers who would prefer to conduct quick and simple analyses as well as for those of a more scientific background, wishing to solve complex problems. SIMI motion is capable to 2D Analysis (simple use and quick results, 2D measurements), Simple 3D Analysis (simple 3D configurations in the middle price range, High data quality for simple problems) and Complex 3D Analysis (for the most scientific requirements and complex measurements).
It provides Scientific precise movement data for kinematics and kinetics (position, speeds, accelerations, angles, distances, etc) with synchronised data from additional measurement devices such as EMG measurements(Movement recordings) or force plates. This data can be processed further to obtain additional analysis parameters (further angles, mathematical calculations, filtered and rectified EMG data, phases, events, etc) according to requirements. Data analysis and reporting, Data exportation into further programmes when necessary, Movement data calculations (position, path, velocity, acceleration etc.), 2D or 3D movement data capture through the tracking of joint centres, are the other benefits.
