Probiotic bacteria help in the biocontrol of pathogenic bacteria in the culture water and also in the body of the animal (usually explained by r/K selection theory). They are also certainly helpful in the bioremediation of water, used for culture, by the breakdown of pollutants or waste.

The definition of a probiotic is: " Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host "(WHO/FAO). Probiotic by definition needs a host that consums it. Hence it has nothing to do with environmental management as such.
