The infinite information contained in all life forms on Earth is recoreded in the largest encyclopedia of life (biodiversity). This encyclopedia of life is indeed the most valuable of all of our many books and encyclopedias, as it contains
the entire history and legacy of all life on Earth from its very beginnings
3,500,000,000 years ago. Unfortunately, this greatest encyclopedia of all time is tattered and torn, pages are missing, and entire chapters have been
ripped out. Humans are heedlessly destroying habitats, modifying habitats, degrading ecosystems, introducing invasive species, over-exploiting the species/population to the maximum extent, effectively ripping
out pages of the “Encyclopedia of Life” even before scientists have had a chance to read them and understand their mysteries and beauties. We are burning the greatest book for nothing more than to expand the human population, which is already precariously high as well as burning the book only to cook and satiate our consumerist aspirations - our lust and hunger. In Wilson's words "“Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius.” Is every species is important for ecosystem? If not, why has Mother Nature selected them and permit them to exist on earth? How can we evaluate the relative values and importance of species in ecosystem structure and function?
