Whenever we think about remote sensing & image processing, a number of application that comes across our minds are like land cover classification, crop classification or ocean surface target analysis. But there might be some more research issues that can be part of the mentioned area but still need some more research focus.
I think this technology can be trained to detect abiotic stresses in crops, disease detection/prevalence in cultivated crops, nutrient deficiency in crops etc. Besides image processing can be used in food processing, warehouses for storage monitoring and control, food safety etc
I recently read a paper on how they employed machine learning to automatically detect archaeological mounds with visual band data. So, I would presume that in the future, they could use SAR P-band to see through shallow archaeological deposits to identify possible antiques or elements of interest before they could even begin to dig.
There are many areas that can be explored such as vegetation, water resources, climate, air pollution, … monitoring. production of various maps in agricultural discussions such as irrigated areas map, land use, natural hazard maps such as floods. Geological and even mineralogical discussions.
As mentioned above, archaeological prospection using high-resolution aerial images as well as hyperspectral scanning can reveal buried archaeological remains. Considering hyperspectral imaging one issue is to investigate in which spectral bands crop marks caused by buried archaeology are detectable, and in which time periods of the year the likelihood for detection is greatest (e.g. hot summer months when the vegetation is stressed). Comparing aerial imagery with reflectance of airborne laser scanning data sets is as well of interest, since ALS can be acquired as well during night-time surveys. Time-lapse remote sensing surveys are interesting to study, to improve the detection of actual changes versus data variability caused by changes in measurement technology. Image based 3D modelling using old aerial photographs is as well a field that is still underated.

Crop spacings on the field by farmers determine seed rates for different crops grown in farmlands. These spacings have been well established and used religiously without questioning by farmers; however, I believe that Remote sensing and image processing can be used to fine-tune old crop spacing in Agriculture in order to maximize light capture for photosynthesis and thus increase crop yields.
