Traditional sewerage tech/infrastructure is very energy and water intensive. What are some modified forms of sewage tech/infrastructure, that have lower energy requirements or can source electricity from sewage passively (e.g. methane capture)? Looking for both IP/commercial and public domain examples that are fitting for developing country urban contexts.
The oil palm industry has done much work in using the biomass from the fruit bunches, as fuel for the boilers for generating steam.
The waste water is fed into ponds which undergo anaerobic digestion to produce methane. This methane is captured and used for power generation.
One idea is to use methane gas from these plants to power solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFC) or molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC) to produce electricity that can used to reduce the grid-based electricity used in these plants.
Another idea is to employ rooftops solar PV panels to generate renewable electricity.
