1. Read the instructions to authors to discover detailed guidance about the scope and topics covered by the journal.
2. Check the table of contents of recent issues. You want to see that they have published article similar to yours, but not TOO similar very recently. For example, a journal may not want to publish a meta-analysis article two issues in a row, so the editors might slow down the process for the second one, or reject it directly.
3. Research the journal to make sure it is not a predatory journal. Then check its other citation indexes and compare then to any guidance your school gives for promotion and tenure.
