Normally in optimization perspective for FSW of higher grade Aluminum, the harness decreases and it is considered as higher the better. Obviously a decrease in hardness leads to increase in ductility. So what should be the optimization criteria in this case if bend test is considered as one of the output?
Bend test output not only depend on ductility but also on the quality of joint. High ductility, obviously provide better output in bend test. As aluminum is softer and ductile better to obtain high hardness and optimize according to the bend test results.
Basically, there is a trade off between hardness and ductility or toughness of metals; when you increase hardness of a metal, there will be a corresponding decrease in its ductility. However, in case of bend testing, Vipin Shama has given the best response on your question.
Can anyone provide any paper in connection to the relation between ductility and hardness in FSW?
