I’d ask first if it is an “achievement” gap. Measures of Achievement that look at differences assume. people start from the same spot. Models can introduce factors that may explain some of the variation in the differences, but what about the assumption that everyone starts with equal opportunity. THAT is a prenatal to entering school system set of factors. Perhaps given the structural, systemic, cultural precursors to entering the school system, some if these factors should be studied, like prenatal care, parenting education, books for children and reading to children daily, talking to children daily, healthy food, and non-trauma filled environments (see groundbreaking Adverse Childhood Events study, especially, for impacts of early trauma on learning). The gap happens before schooling. Just widens, IMO, because of non-responsive systems that penalize children without opportunities to be schooling-ready.
