I came across this article from the UN http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/1037253/icode/ stating that 815 million people (11% of the global population) suffer from hunger. This is too many people going hungry. How can we improve this situation?
There are many ways to improve global food security more important are: Reduce food waste, Close the yield gap, Use fertilizer more efficiently, Raise low water productivity, Proper distribution of food and Target food for direct consumption.
Right now, the world is closer than ever before to ending global hunger, under-nutrition, and extreme poverty, but significant challenges and opportunities remain, including urbanization, gender inequality, instability and conflict, the effects of a changing climate, and environmental degradation. Despite our collective progress in global food security and nutrition over recent years, a projected 702 million people still live in extreme poverty, nearly 800 million people around the world are chronically undernourished, and 159 million children under five are stunted. Food security is not just an economic and humanitarian issue; it is also a matter of security, as growing concentrations of poverty and hunger leave countries and communities vulnerable to increased instability, conflict, and violence.
Inclusive and sustainable agricultural-led economic growth, as growth in the agriculture sector has been shown in some areas to be more effective than growth in other sectors at helping men and women lift themselves out of extreme poverty and hunger. It does this by increasing availability of food, generating income from production, creating employment and entrepreneurship opportunities throughout value chains, and spurring growth in rural and urban economies.
Strengthened resilience among people and systems, as increasingly frequent and intense shocks and stresses threaten the ability of men, women, and families to sustainable emerge from poverty.
A well-nourished population, especially among women and children, as under-nutrition, particularly during the 1,000 days from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday, leads to lower levels of educational attainment, productivity, lifetime earnings, and economic growth rateز
There is no certain method for world food secuirty. Many stratgies should be adopted in integrated way that end up with using the available resources in sustainable manner.
The situation is not research or researchers, if that were the world would be otherwise the question is economic and political, feasible solutions exist, but the question is that they do not apply, and colleagues have mentioned some.
Global food security is a complex subject with challenges from global climate change to political instability and gender inequality. While it is true food security is a global issue it is wise to accept that it is more of an issue in the developing world than in the developed world. According to the USAID (2001) report countries in Africa such as Tanzania and Uganda which once had national food surpluses were still indicated as having a considerable food insecurity challenges for the large proportion of their population. Suggesting that the physical availability of food does not translate to the achievement of food security. Food security is always recognized as a complex matter with wicked problems due to its nature of being broad and inclusive of different levels of complex interactions at global or national level and with different stakeholders. Wicked problems require wicked solutions. It involves a complicated food value chain system that all contribute to its availability, access, and utilization differently. While the works of agricultural researchers can improve land productivity and annual agricultural yield increase, as well as promote the agro-ecological and sustainable farming approaches, it would be naive to think that these alone will guarantee improvement of global food security. It requires more than an agricultural researcher, a comprehensive cross disciplinary researches should be the focus. There are evidences where women empowerment in agricultural activities and rural households having greater contribution in food security matters, particularly in the developing countries and I think this should be one of the focuses of the researchers.
I think that apart from the much needed development of sustainable technologies and practices for agricultural, the global food security problem lies with that of food distribution rather than that of production. If we are to look at it on a local scale, in most developing countries there are a lot of farms but the distribution network is bad, therefore drifting those countries into a state of food insecurity. i think the research capacity is adequate but just because a monetary value is being placed the distribution network becomes corrupt.
