In as much as the basic tenets of research are still the same, research in the 21st century is considerably different with that in the previous centuries. Young researchers are often caught up in the maze where they find they have more articles in their research folders than they will ever read. The majority of which being rather insignificant to their research area. The major reason of all this being they do not know where to find what they really need.
I use what I call the 'core 20' system. This means having 20 articles that you are very familiar with. Then, when a new article comes along, you decide if it should replace one of the established 20 articles (because it is highly significant to the research) or whether it is additional material (in which case it is put in a second folder). Both 'core' and 'additional' folders should then be reviewed every so often and changes made accordingly.

That sounds like an very practical system. I will surely adopt this method.
I tend to use many, and then cut back as per my supervisors suggestions. In this day and age there sure volume of information poses a challenge to only having a small number of articles.
