I am writing a research proposal and was advised to use hypothesis based writing. I tried searching on google about that but didn't get any satisfactory hits. I am writing a scientific research proposal for my postgraduate studies, environmental sciences. I need some basic things like
1. How to formulate a hypothesis
2. How to develop research experimental from a hypothesis
3. Tips to writing an effective research proposal
4. Best approach in writing a literature review driven by a hypothesis

Environmental Sciences is a big field. So first and foremost you need to figure out your area of interest, then read some research articles and try to look out for some gaps in those researches. There must be aspects which may not have been addressed properly in those papers. So focus your attention on that. Plan how are you going to fill those gaps and hypothesize what results you may get after you finish your work. The results which you get may be entirely different from what you had hypothesized but its okay.
So in your research progress, first mention about previous work in the field that you have selected, then mention about the gaps and why is filling those gaps important. Then you can tentatively write how are you going to plan your experiments ad what kind of techniques you may use and how much time it may take. It’s not that difficult. You just have to do a lot of literature study.

Thank you Robin for the response. I am specifically working on the enantioselective degradation of pharmaceuticals in the environment. I have done my literature review and have identified the areas that lack or has limited data on the fate of these micropollutants. My problem was on how to write a typical hypothesis that is testable.
A hypothesis is simply a statement of a proposed relationship between any two (or more) variables. So a statement such as "when X increases, Y also increases" is a simply hypothesis that can be empirically tested. You can be more precise, of course. For example, "when X increases by __ amount, Y increases by __ amount."
Obviously, you can also propose an inverse relationship. E.g. "when X increases, Y decreases."
While writing the research hypothesis for the research proposal we should deeply discuss about why you selected this field, deep literature survey related to our area, find out the gaps, and finally how you are going to address the gaps. In this you can tentatively write the work plan, what are the techniques involved, duration of your work, expected output, and how it will be helpful for the society
