Cast iron is metal, not ceramic. But it is brittle, and quite strong. What can be additives that can be added to increase its strength, corrosion resistance and high temperature stability so that it can be used in place of hard ceramics in structural application? on can it not be qualified as a ceramic even if its microstructure is predominantly intermetallic?
Chromium, vanadium additive may result in improving ductility and that increases the ultimate tensile load yield point which may lead to enhancement in area under the stress strain curve(which gives the toughness value).
Alloy iron with chromium and molybdenum content
Exemplary chemical composition: C = 1, 1 - 1.35%, Mn = 0.4 -0.7%,
Si = O, S- 0.8%, Cr = 29-31% and Mo = 1.0-1, 3%
In very aggressive environments, the molybdenum content should be increased.
