Due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (pandemic Covid-19 disease) pandemic, production, consumption dropped, logistics chains were broken, electricity consumption decreased, etc. Greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution decreased, and the amount of waste, etc. However, when the pandemic ends, economic growth will return to a similar level before the pandemic. On the other hand, the period of decline in production can be used to carry out the necessary pro-ecological reforms, e.g. in the energy sector, reforms involving the conversion of classic energy based on combustion of minerals into energy based on renewable energy sources. If the scale of implemented ecological reforms, implementation of eco-innovations, etc. were large, then after the pandemic has expired, greenhouse gas emissions could be slightly lower than before the pandemic.

The nature has rejuvenated itself during the lockdown period but these impacts are temporary. It can return back to its previous stage once the industrial and transportation sector becomes fully functional.

Dear All,

the lockdown will/ needs to be temporary.

We cannot make progress in medicine and achieve an improvement of the health conditions while facing a relapse into medieval times in business, transport.....etc. along with a continuous growth of the population.

It would be squaring the circle.

We need more space to live in, food, water, energy, clean air and everybody wants amenities to make his/her life livable

We have to keep our planet clean with suitable measures but not with cloistered ideologies.

When even the President of the USA denies COVID-19 and Climate Change and pollutes US aquifers, opens coal mines again, I am afraid that few countries will manage to keep CO2 emissions and pollution in general at a level which was as low as during the COVID-19 crisis in many countries.

I am not optimistic. In Europe (with Greenland) and the Arctic Climate Change is becoming more and more visible, and can be felt even at skin level.

Don't worry and be happy. According to President Trump this is all fake news.

No! The decrease in air pollution could be maintained for few months after the lockdown is over. But as soon as this pandemic is drastically reduced or eradicated. There will emerge other rounds of global pollution from human activities.

No way! Less pollution cannot maintain after the COVID-19 crisis will come to an end. It may even grow faster.

During War World Two atmospheric CO2 percentage stopped growing, though had returned to a faster growth after the war.

COVID-19 crisis has not changed the basic principles of our civilization:

a. Constant growth of population.

b. Constant growth of standard of life.

c. Preferring profit and good life over Nature balance and sustainability.

c. And therefore constant growth of nature resources consumption and waste emission.

COVID-19 crisis even capable to strengthen these civilization basic principles.

I don't think, unless the citizens of the countries have become aware that voluntary confinements need to be done at least one day a month, to avoid adding carbon pollution to the environment, it would be a good initiative, to which the authorities can join .

COVID hiatus will be over soon. Levels of pollution will return in a short time because of increased energy use. As for climate change and global warming, the earth has been warming for 12,000 years during the Holocene glacial epoch. Whether we are coming out of the present ice age or not is not predictable. Man's activity does not impact very much on warming rates. Holocene warming is probably more due to long term natural changes in earth's motion relative to the sun ( tilt, precession, elliptic ). Also, more important than atmospheric CO2 in predicting global warming , is water vapor in the atmosphere. Difficult to model. Climate change models vary greatly and are most likely all wrong. However, some models are useful but far from definitive. We should be concerned more about pollution levels in our cities and drastic reductions in potable water. Because of population growth and pollution we are experiencing a potable water crisis.

The current reduction in air pollution is not deliberate, but rather accidentally caused by the effect of COVID-19. It will, therefore, not remain the same once the COVID-19 crisis are over. It may, however, bring more perspectives on the ongoing discussion about air pollution, global warming and climate change.

As the industries and vehicles have been stopped or running limitedly during the lockdown period we have got less pollution and less carbon particles in the air. But after the crisis these economic based activities will be started as usual to boost up the economy of all countries of the world. However, the previous deteriorate condition of the air or environment will return again after this crisis. But the degree of deterioration may be less due to the awareness of the people having experiencing the pandemic.

Hahaha. not at all. After the lockdown, all factories will be at a full force of operation and the amount of emission will possibly be tripled.

Dear researcher, our studies show the significant decrease in air pollution in Kathmandu city during the Covid-19 lockdown. It also has the same impact these days (second phase lockdown) too. However, after the end of the first phase lockdown, pollution was again increased to hazardous levels of USEPA standard. I think this improvement of air quality is just for a short period. I am afraid, our research works of these periods are just to cite in future pollution research works, indicating that "someday there was a pure air for a short period". :D
