Can you suggest analysis methods for determination of dropplet size created by nozzle with pressurized water?
I have found expensive methods such as:
1) laser diffraction (Malvern laser)
2) optical area probe technique (Particle Measuring System)
3) phase doppler particle analyser (PDPA)
However I cannot find such instruments in our University - maybe someone have seen simpler and less precise methods?
Dear Sir! Single dropplets hanging on a nozzle can be characterized by modified Contact Angle measurement systems. If you do want charcterize a fog you should think about methods based on light scattering. However, your problem is more difficult? Wkr, M. Herms.
Thank you for responses. Photographic technique is the one we are considering however we do not own specific system with lasers. Was wondering if anyone have seen using high exposure with DSLR cameras and photoediting or somthing of that nature for cheaper alternative.
Is the idea behind the image that the droplets are caught on horizontal material that does not absorb water and are later measured? If I am not wrong it is something what Martin mentioned - Contact Angle measurement system. We have a digital microscope, but I guess one needs a special material so the droplets are not absorbed and they do not flow together and make bigger droplets than when they were in air. Any ideas what is that material in image?
I have little knowledge in this field so I would not be the one who can say if this is new or not. From the little reading I have done on the topic the closest one seem the coated slides method.
In particular they use rotating sampler. However their application is specific for aerosols.

Our case is closer to the paper you posted at start from SP. Therefore I am not sure that the rotating option would work, since the droplets will be closer to 1600 um, however the part of the coated slide I believe is still applicable.
Then it comes the choice of material - either the cost of coating with magnesium or other option.
Dear Mikelis, However I am using PDPA for droplet size characterization, but the cheapest methods which I have seen to be used in the literature are
1) " water sensitive papers"(mostly used in the agricultural field)
2) Image processing (usually shadow-graphy)
Since all the size measurement methods have uncertainties, its suggested to compare and calibrate the result of cheap methods to a more reliable one.
Reza Alidoost Dafsari thank you for answer. We edned up aquiring nozzle which had data from manufacturer. But we did try short exposure photography with some success. Shortest exposure we could get was 50 micro seconds, so there was too much blur and large uncertainty.
