At our lab I am working on VRFBs. Our work station has two containers to hold the catholyte and anolyte solutions. Our cell feeds in both the positive and negative solution from only one side of the cell and we have applied load to the cell in a way that the feeding side became the anode of the cell. Having known all of these, the first few times tests ran successfully and results seemed reasonable but then the anode side carbon felt electrode was drained after each test while cathode side carbon felt electrode was moist and worked properly. This affected the efficiency a lot. 

I have observed the following: 

-Minor leakage at the anode pump outlet so I assumed there must be some precipitates of vanadium clogging the cell and pump interior 

Therefore I contained the leakage, disassembled the cell and pump and washed all the components thoroughly.

I tested everything: 

-Pumps are calibrated 

-Vanadium flows properly in the cell 

-I replaced the old membrane and felts with new ones 

But yet again the anode side carbon felt dried up while the cathode carbon felt was in perfect moist conditions. 

(My tests consist of 10 cycles of charge and discharge and they last for more than 12 hours) 

Now I have no idea what is yet causing the anode felt to dry up after the ten cycles. What seems to be the problem?
