Do you find value in collecting participant survey data? If yes, what type of measures do you collect?
Within the Virtual Reality space, I collect participant surveys data that focus on workload measure (NASA-TLX), engagement measure, flow, simulator sickness questionnaire (just to name a few).
Please share your thoughts...
Can you please clarify your question? What do you mean by "finding value in collecting participant survey data?" I am used to collecting data from different sources (bio, physiological, behavioral, subjective by selfreport.). All of these measures can be relevant. However, I never worked with NASA TLX. This study comparing several measures of workload has concluded that "among the operator-based instruments, the NASA TLX is the most reliable and valid questionnaire to measure workload and that NASA TLX can be used in a healthcare setting" Article Measuring workload of ICU nurses with a questionnaire survey...

The NASA TLX is a large and unweildy instrument. My colleagues at Delft created and promoted the SMEQ questionnaire which is really brief and easy to administer. It measures "Subjective Mental Effort". Sauro and Dumas included the SMEQ in a Chi (2009) paper, but if you want a detailed explanation, please write to me.
I have long supported a 50-item questionnaire called SUMI (see sumi.uxp.ie ) which measures user experience in five dimensions, and collects free text responses to zero in on problem areas. It's online and connects to a very large standardisation base.
