There are a number of ultrasound devices available in the market. It is difficult to determine which one is the best in terms of accuracy and easy to operate.
Renco Lean-Meater, Renco Corporation (http://www.rencocorp.com/lean-meater.htm) is a simply to use and precise device for measuring subcutaneous fat in several animal species. We use it for swine, horses and cattle. Best regards
Aloka 500 is OK but I would suggest rather the next generation, Aloka PS2. This scaner is not especialy friendly, but if you spend some time to get to know him it will give great opportunities for diagnosis and the best accuracy from all available on the market portable ultrasound scaners. Best regards
Aloka PS2 don't have carcass probes software. For carcass uses i recommend ultrasound certificated by Ultrasound Guidelines Council (www.ultrasoundbeef.com).
Thanks for the kind responses from various researchers and academicians. Renco Lean meter is good for measuring backfat in cattle but not for diagnosing early pregnancy in cattle, I suppose. Another model from Renco is available which is Preg-Alert Pro for determining pregnancy and backfat and loin thickness, if anyone has experience with this model, kindly share with me. Some one suggested me to use DP-30 Vet by Mindray, your experiences and comments will be helpful to me in determining the appropriate ultrasound.
The Aloka 500 is what I use for all my reproductive ultrasound needs. Also you will not be able to reliably detect pregnancy in cattle before day 30 regardless of the model of ultrasound but you will need a rectal probe (5 mHz) for reproductive ultrasound and a different ultrasound probe for the rib-eye and back fat ultrasound.
Hello, we use a Titan-SonoSite for backfat thickness in Holstein heifers and cattle and works excellent, it is very portable like a laptop, have an armored shell ideal for veterinary work and also you can change the probe mHz (from 3.5 to 7 in the same probe) but of course you need the transrectal probe to detect pregnancies. Also it has Doppler image. And the best is not so expensive as Aloka, I love the Aloka US but for my work it is less practical. http://www.sonosite.com/veterinary.
Hello Karia, thanks for letting me know about another ideal ultrasound for measuring backfat thickness in heifers and also for pregnancy diagnosis. I have written to the company to send me further details of the product.
