I wanted to impose initial stress into a model by INISTATE command in workbench . But I find some problems with it .Because all selected elements weren't selected or some times impose other stresses that I didn't define that .
I don't know why ? could you help me please ? is there any way to impose residual stress ?

I use the INISTATE command via a APDL snippet directly applied to the geometry via material type selection: INISTATE,SET,MAT. This works very well for my problems. Make sure you define the stresses in all directions even if you make some 2D assumptions. Beside this you have to consider, that the initial stress only affects the stress state as an initial condition. Therfore this stress may cause deformation if in contact with geometries without initial stress, or if you have stress gradients in oyur material.
If you keep this things in mind you shouldn't have troubles. If you want to import more complex initial stresses, you can find many tutorials or also some papers on that topic.

I tried to apply initial stress for LINK180 by APDL commands in Static Structural (A5):
STRESS_VALUE=100/LINK_AREA
LINK_TYPE_NUM=3
ESEL,S,TYPE , , LINK_TYPE_NUM, , ,
INISTATE,SET, DTYP, STRE
INISTATE,DEFINE,all,, , ,STRESS_VALUE, , , , ,
allsel
but it doesnt work for LINK180. But it works for BEAM188.
So could you advise me how to apply the initial stress in right way for LINK180, please?
