Dear Colleagues! How do you think the concept of "University 3.0" in the world is already outdated? Is there a chance to build a "University 4.0" for those who have not passed the "3.0" stage?
I think you have to give your own definitions on University x.y here, start from the 1.0. This is not any ISO 14000 specifications, but buzz words used in many ways.
I personally quite like the idea of dealing with all these indices, tied to some kind of system-forming scale. For example, it could be the "Industry X.0" logic. Why not? And, if you become attached to this logic, you should talk about “University 4.0”, since “Industry 4.0” is very popular. Although some, for example, at SAP, are already talking about the upcoming "next version" ;)
At the same time, I quite like the idea of an "entrepreneurial university", which is often seen as "University 3.0". Here, for example, in the Republic of Belarus, it is precisely what they are going to “introduce”...
Although it’s not in the “indexes”...
I wonder what it means to understand them... Including without ISO definitions or maturity model modifications (although this is also a good idea) :)
Hi! Do you know the work of Ronald Barnett. He is on RG. Listened to him once, very interesting, he is ”imagining the university” https://ejournals.bc.edu/ojs/index.php/ihe/article/download/6085/5330 by a constructed concept play: ”The research university”; The bureaucratic university; ”the ecological university” etc and discusses in papers, books and lectures about 40 such concepts of the form ”The xyz University” (maybe more now). Here are some of his slides - see on the second half of the series especially https://slideplayer.com/slide/6222483/ . He is rather critical to ”the entreprenerial university” but kind of likes ”the ecological university” more, but has criticism there as well. Quite interesting framework for nuanced discussion.
Barnett views the university as involved in a number of ecologies with society and nature around the university, of which economy only is one.
Others are – Knowledge – Social/political institutions – Natural environment – Economy – Culture – Learning – Human subjectivity
See the slides linked above - and then proceed to this good paper http://usc.edu.co/files/Seminario_Universidad/Sesion_1/4__The_Idea_of_the_University_in_the_Twenty_First_Century.pdf
You can check up his book on the subject The Ecological University on: https://www.routledge.com/The-Ecological-University-A-Feasible-Utopia-1st-Edition/Barnett/p/book/9781138720763 and find on the same page a rather large text preview and a number of book reviews as well which also gives interpretations and understandings.
Is it not possible that universities can possess a combination of many of the characteristics given to each type of university described in the literature? Categorizations always suffer from such problems.
Hi Wondwosen Tamrat ! Yes, sure. I do not think this is meant as categorisations, and of course many institutions are a mix of ideas. This is more about exposing one characteristic at a time, for discussing that as an idea. Reality is always much more complex than ideas, but it is hard to discuss them all at once.
